But What Is Psychedelic Rock?

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, psychedelic rock became the music of the 1960s, especially with the growth of the hippie movement. With its early roots on the West Coast–think Grateful Dead— the music began to invade the rest of the country.

Established bands like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Rolling Stones started to incorporate elements of psychedelic rock like electronics and intense volume. Though many bands didn’t last longer than an album or two, the genre itself transcended industries impacting fashion, art and the form of live performance.

Other genres also grew from psychedelic rock like heavy metal, progressive, electronic and funk music. In the 1990s, there were obvious influences of the genre in hip-hop and rap, too.

According to Medusa’s Disco Facebook page, the band “has become the misfit puzzle piece of the local festival landscape. Tumbling the piece alone in your hand, it’s not certain where exactly they fit, but once pressed into the picture, it’s clear there is a space carved out just for them.”

Band members include Wynton Huddle on vocals, guitar, and sitar; Hunter Root on vocals and guitar; Alex Aument with the drums and Justin Wohlfeil rocking on the bass.

Cousin Earth is a Brooklyn based band that spins sci-fi rock that “pushes the limits of both genre and musicality with catchy songs, evolving jams, and dynamic funk grooves.”

Jelli is the Harrisburg band that is best known as Hippie Funk Rock and Alt Folk.  With an acoustic and “electric ensemble, they mix funk, punk, folk, bluegrass, classic rock, blues, and heavy metal into a feel-good, energetic, easy to relate with sound.”
